At first glance, I don’t think most people generally remember 1991’s Desert Storm as the world’s first space war. But from a technology point of view that’s exactly what it was. When Saddam Hussein ordered the Iraqi army to invade Kuwait and the U.S. led a coalition to eject them, the U.S. was fortunate to have in place the space-based building blocks needed to form the first true theater level battle network. The DoD began to fully exploit space-based communications while at the same time using GPS to provide Joint forces precise timing, positioning and navigation information.
